With its diverse terrain, scenic views, and well-maintained trails, Prescott is a perfect destination for day trips from Phoenix. Whether you want a challenging loop or a peaceful lakeside stroll, this area has something for every hiker. Below, you’ll find detailed information on six top trails, including trail length, difficulty, and highlights, along with AllTrails insights to help you plan your next adventure.

My Favorite: Woodchute Trail
Length: 6.7mi Elevation Gain: 990ft Average time: 3-4hr Difficulty: Moderate
Woodchute Trail
Only about 40min from the center of town, lies Mingus Mountain. If you turn left off the 89A is the Woodchute trail and if you turn right is Mingus Mountain Loop. Woodchute gives you amazing view of Cottonwood, Sedona, Camp Verde and on the other side view of Prescott. This trail is so beautiful at sunset and secluded. Last time we saw some pretty fresh black bear poop so always stay alert! This trail is beautiful in the fall as well. There is also some dispersed camping on both sides of the 89A. Mingus Mountain Loop has an easy access viewpoint, perfect for those iconic Instagram pics.
Mingus Mountain Loop
Underrated: Constellation Trail
Length: 2.5mi Elevation Gain: 223ft Average time: 1-2hr Difficulty: Easy
When we first got back to Prescott I was avoiding doing this one for a while because I didn't remember it being special, but my memory did me wrong! Going at sunset on this hike couldn't be more beautiful. Incredible rock formations with several trail options. We have even done this one on a lunch break because it doesn't take long to complete. The only downside is it is $5 to park unless its Wednesday.
One to do over again: Goldwater Lakes Loop
Length: 4.7mi Elevation Gain: 134ft Average time: 1-2hr Difficulty: Easy
I normally like to start at upper Goldwater lake walking clockwise and I go further into the forest on the trail that would connect to White Spar. I always see deer on a particular part of the trail. Horses and bikers also take this trail. Although lower Goldwater is beautiful as well. It is $5 for parking (free on Wednesdays) but totally worth it in my opinion. I've done this one quite a few times. You can't swim in this lake but it is great for fishing and kayaking.
The Icon: Granite Mountain Trail
Length: 7.9mi Elevation Gain: 1663ft Average time: 4-5hr Difficulty: Moderate
This trail suits experienced hikers looking for a demanding day with big payoff at the summit. I really didn't think it was bad. There is rock scrambling at the end. I only went to the scenic view look out on Alltrails as I wasn't prepared for the whole thing and wasn't looking for a challenge that day. I would say most of the beauty start after you start climbing the mountain. Gorgeous views every direction you look and you can see the summit the entire hike. We did see a snake on this trail! It took us about 3.5hr but I always stop and take a ton of photos.
For all levels: Peavine Trail
Length: 11.9mi Elevation Gain: 511ft Average time: 4hr Difficulty: Easy
Peavine Trail is a popular multi-use trail that stretches over 11 miles, but many hikers choose shorter sections. It’s mostly flat with gentle inclines, making it accessible for all skill levels. The trail passes through desert landscapes and offers views of Granite Mountain and the Prescott National Forest.
Very easy to access this Trail is entirely flat and will take you around Watson Lake. You might be sharing the road with bikes and even Horses! If you're looking for Horseback riding try Yavapai Trail Adventures.
Even grandma can do this trail. It is never very busy when I've gone, there is lots of wild life and it is a beautiful stroll to take Prescott in.
A must do in Prescott: North Shore, Flume and Watson Damn Loop
Length: 2.1mi Elevation Gain: 295ft Average time: 2hr Difficulty: Moderate
They say there is no other rock formation like "The Dells" in the world. This is a must see if you are visiting Prescott for the first time. There are many trails around the lake, and you can also just go your own way and climb some massive boulders! Although you can't swim in this lake, you can kayak which I recommend, and I've seen some rock climbers here. Just be aware there is no shade around this lake so plan accordingly.
Forest hike with views: Spruce Mountain via 307 Trail
Length: 6.8mi Elevation Gain: 1400ft Average time: 3hr 25Min Difficulty: Moderate

Excuse the old picture above, even though I haven't done this trail in a number of years it has left its mark on me. You weave in-between the pine trails and at the top are greeted with an amazing view of the lush greenery. Take a hammock and hang out at the top for a while. There is a water tank at the top and that's how you know you've made it. I love to redo this one!
