Sedona: A Place where your Spirit will Soar

Updated: Apr 18

The spiritual energy in Sedona is palpable. We always leave so peaceful, healed and rejuvenated. Located only 2hrs away from Phoenix makes for the perfect day trip. The Red Rocks are nothing short of magnificent but be careful not to get lost in the vortexes!

Sedona Hikes:

Parking not Found: 7 Scared Pools Via Soldier's Pass Cave Trail

Length: 1.1mi Elevation Gain: 95ft Average time: 25hr      Difficulty: Easy

Ah Sedona, a hiker's paradise but a parking nightmare. Lets first discuss logistics.

Please note: The above trail info starts directly from the trailhead, but the chances of getting parking at the actual trailhead are almost non-existent. The first time I did this hike we had to park FAR away and walk the road which is why we only made to 7 Sacred Pools and turned back.

However, now there is a shuttle running during the busy season that can take you straight to trailhead but keep in mind they only allow service animals on board. Here's a map of the shuttles. You will need to purchase your ticket ahead of time. It runs from 6:30am to 6:00pm Thursday - Sunday. Regular Fair is $2.00

Alright now the hike. This is a easy hike from the actual trailhead. You'll will first come above Devils Sinkhole before reaching the pools. Pretty much all hikes are popular here in Sedona so there will be a lot of people at the pools. But look closely and you can the Red Rocks reflecting in the water. I'm hoping to go back soon (without my dog), and do all of Soldier's Pass to Brins Mesa Loop which is a 5.6mi hike.

Walk on the Edge: Hangover Trail

Length: 6.1mi Elevation Gain: 892ft Average time: 3hr      Difficulty: Moderate

Let me start by saying don't do what I did and listen to Google Maps. I blew right pass the parking on my left and found myself on 4x4 (and I mean Jeep only road), which then cut the hike in half. LOL Epic Fail. Luckily I have big lifted truck and the off-roading was kind of fun but I was sad I didn't get to do the entire hike.

Immediately (from where I started) there was incredible views on the red rocks and behind me was Munds Mountain. I recommend doing this hike at sunset because on the way down Munds Mountain glowing orange in front of you the whole way down. It looked completed different from the day time to golden hour.

You'll quickly understand why they call it the "Hangover" trail because you are walking on the edge of this mountain! Unlike other Sedona hike there are unobstructed views almost the entire way. I didn't make it all the way to top but almost. The very top of the hike is smooth steep rock, similar to Devil's Scramble from the Peralta Trail. Going up with my pup was fine but I was worried about going down so I didn't want to push it. She always gets her nails filed on this types of hikes!

I think I only ran into one other couple the entire hike because I like to go at sunset. I even saw some deer! I would definitely take family on this one.

My Favorite: Boynton Canyon Trail to Subway Cave

Length: 6.5mi Elevation Gain: 918ft Average time: 3hr      Difficulty: Moderate

After this hike we could not stop saying "What a great hike" and "What a great day" over and over!

The parking is slightly better at this trail, but you will need to buy a pass at the trailhead at the card machine. There is room to park on the side of the road but that will add to your hike. We were lucky enough to get a spot later in the day.

We only hiked to the Subway Cave and ruins so it was more like 5miles. And of course I wore my favorite fricking hiking shorts ever. I have them in 3 colors and got this color specifically for this hike!

You will need to turn right to go to the Subway Cave. Personally I would rate this hike Easy. We took our time strolling. This hike is incredible. There is so much greenery and thickets you go into and of course views of the red rocks. There is a bit of rock scrambling near the very top of Subway Cave. Its part of a larger cave where there are ruins off to one side. I couldn't stop taking pictures because every angle was so beautiful. We went at sunset and it made the red rocks in the distance a vibrant orange.

To see the actual Subway save it is a very steep very smooth rock incline which was actually scary to me. Just be careful. We took Bella (our dog) everywhere except the actual Subway cave but there is so much in the larger cave system to explore.

All hikes are pretty popular in Sedona but since we tend to be sunset hikers there was almost no one on the trail! We just got lucky. There are so many different beautiful sceneries to take in on this hike.

Wait no, THIS is my favorite: West Fork Trail #108

Length: 6.5mi Elevation Gain: 564ft Average time: 3hr      Difficulty: Easy

I've been dying to go back to the trail since I left. I would rate this trail easy and its perfect for the hotter months because you're basically in a canyon with lots of trees and you're in the shade pretty much the whole time. There is also water flowing in the creek. I think its must different than other Sedona Hikes.

Of course it will be busy but so worth it. This is one of the most popular trails in Sedona and for good reason. I mean just look at the pictures. This one is a little further Sedona, in-between Sedona and Flagstaff.

My Funny Story: The Birthing Cave

Length: 1.9mi Elevation Gain: 232ft Average time: 1hr      Difficulty: Easy

If you like instagram-able spots without much work then this hike is perfect for you. Parking situation is the same as other trails, not great. I would recommend bringing a wide lens with you, just trust me. The cave is slick and you have to stand on the edge like spider man to be back far enough to capture the entire thing.

Funny Story: the first time my friend an I attempted to find this cave we got SUPER lost. I think we were traveling down the Long Canyon Trail for hours, but really this hike is pretty short. This was before I had even heard of AllTrails. Sooo, be sure to turn LEFT to see the birthing cave.

The Most Popular of all time: Devil's Bridge

Length: 3.9mi Elevation Gain: 521ft Average time: 1hr      Difficulty: Moderate

To be honest, I haven't hiked this one since 2018 mostly because the idea of trying to find parking and walking a far ways from the parking lot is daunting but if you have a 4x4 vehicle can get closer to the actual trailhead.

The actual trail itself is probably the most popular trail next to Cathedral Rock, so expect crowds. And if you want a photo on the actual bridge, get in line. Literally, there is always a line to take pictures and I hope you aren't afraid of heights.

Its a steady incline until the end where its basically like a Stairmaster. The rocks resemble a staircase and are heavily traveled. You can also go off to the left and go under the bridge if that floats your boat.

But boy is it incredible!
